Immersive Reader Research
Project Overview
In the immersive reading research project led by Dr. R. Kelly Garrett, I played a crucial role in investigating the impact of immersive reading technology on users' reading comprehension and confidence levels. Our objective was to determine if immersive reading technology could enhance the reading experience beyond its conventional use for individuals with learning disabilities. By conducting an experiment and analyzing the data, we aimed to provide insights into the effectiveness and potential applications of immersive reading technology.
Project Details:
To conduct our study, we designed an experiment using the Qualtrics survey platform. Our participants, aged 18-22 and unfamiliar with immersive reading technology, were randomly assigned to either use the technology or read the passage without it. Both groups answered comprehension questions, and participants rated their confidence in their answers. This design allowed us to compare the comprehension levels and confidence between the two groups and draw meaningful conclusions about the impact of immersive reading technology.
Technologies & Research Methods
Immersive reading technology, a tool that highlights words and provides simultaneous audio transcriptions, served as the focal point of our research. This interactive technology engages users through visual and auditory cues. We utilized qualitative research methods, including survey-based data collection, to gather participants' responses and assess their comprehension and confidence. Statistical data development involved analyzing the average percentage of correctly answered comprehension questions, participants' confidence ratings, and their perceived level of understanding of the material. These statistical measures allowed us to conclude the effectiveness of immersive reading technology.
Next Steps & Deliverables:
Based on our findings, I recommend the following actions to promote the accessibility and utilization of immersive reading technology:
Make Immersive Reading Technology Available for University Students: Integrate immersive reading technology as a web accessory on university platforms such as OSU Carmen, ensuring its availability for all required course readings.
Integrate Immersive Reading Technology in Popular Operating Systems (OS): Collaborate with companies to include immersive reading technology as a feature in popular operating systems, enabling its accessibility on all websites and platforms.
Increase Usage and Knowledge of Immersive Reading Technology in Early Childhood Education: Advocate for the incorporation of immersive reading technology in educational resources for younger students, thereby fostering the use of assistive technology from a younger age and potentially aiding undiagnosed learning disabilities.
By implementing these recommendations, immersive reading technology can contribute to improving reading comprehension, confidence levels, and overall accessibility in educational and professional settings. Further research and exploration into the effectiveness, user experience, and design of immersive reading technology will be valuable for its continued development and widespread use.
Supporting Statistical Data
Data Point 1: Percentage of Comprehension Questions Answered Correctly
This chart illustrates the average percentage of comprehension questions answered correctly by participants who used immersive reading technology compared to those who did not. The data demonstrates that users who utilized the technology had a significantly higher average score, indicating improved reading comprehension.
Data Point 2: Average Confidence Levels in Comprehension Answers
This chart showcases the average confidence levels reported by participants when answering comprehension questions. Participants who used immersive reading technology displayed a higher average confidence level compared to those who did not. The data indicates that the technology positively influenced participants' confidence in their comprehension abilities.
Data Point 3: Participants' Perception of Immersive Reading Technology
This point addressed participants' responses regarding their perception of immersive reading technology. A remarkable 100% of participants who used the technology agreed that it improved their reading comprehension. Additionally, a significant percentage of participants who did not use the technology expressed interest in its potential benefits.
